“You certainly know a lot of people.” I shook my head in amazement at Matthew. They all seemed to like him, and I didn’t get it. I thought he was supposed to be a standoffish rich guy.

I had asked him why we didn’t just call or email, but he’d insisted the personal touch was best. “Face-to-face gets you the best results. It’s good business. Are you in a hurry? We’re going to visit all the past participants plus pitch to some possible new ones.”

I had a spreadsheet open on my iPad to keep track of everyone. I had no idea there were this many restaurants and food trucks in Cooperstown.

“Luke, you know your ribs are what everyone will go home dreaming about,” Matthew said to the owner of Rubbed Ribs. “This town would be proud to have you at the festival. We can give you attendance numbers and all the demographic figures from the last five years so you can have enough food on hand for the event.”

“Sure, Matt. Count me in,” Luke said. He turned to me and smiled. “I hope you liked the sample platter.”

I rubbed my stomach happily. “Best I’ve ever had. You’ve ruined me for anyone else’s ribs forever.”

And on and on we went, eating our way through town.

“I love food,” I sighed contentedly as I scooped up a spoonful of chocolate ice cream with bacon bits on top.

“I see you, weird eater,” Matt smirked, gesturing like a character from an Avatar movie.

I was finally full to the point of uncomfortable. I’m glad I hadn’t listened to Nicole and worn a loose-fitting summer dress instead. Otherwise, I’d have been undoing the top button on my shorts by now. Real classy.

“So if we’re just doing the food part, who is in charge of the alcohol?” I asked.

“Big Dan. He has a lot of connections through the grocery store. They will have a big beer garden and also a hard liquor tent. None of the beverage providers ever say no to Dan,” he chuckled.

“Hey, let’s take a walk and work off some of this food,” he said, leading me away from his car at the curb and hooking a left onto a path through the park.

Red vining roses snaked up the park’s stone entryway, hinting at the beauty beyond. We walked by one flower garden with labels on each bush. I bent over and smelled all the flowers, aware that Matt’s eyes were on my ass every time.

“Mmm, this one is delicious,” I said, my chest rising as I took another big whiff. I turned to Matt to encourage him to smell it. His eyes were glued to my chest. They traveled up my neck and to my mouth, and I could swear I felt his gaze stroking my skin.

“So, if the food is the biggest money-maker of the festival, what else are we going to do? I asked quizzically.

“Well,” Matt scratched his chin thoughtfully. “We’ve had a hotdog eating contest. Is that what you mean?”

“While fun, I don’t think that is what brings in more people.
